Why do the properties of Cascara Sagrada as laxative help improve constipation?

Traditionally, Cascara Sagrada is an herb used as laxative that helps relieve an upset stomach and parasitic infections as well as other disorders of the colon. It is a small tree that grows 15-20 feet tall and is located in the Pacific Northwest of United States.  It has been commonly used by many Native American tribes to fight constipation and maintain the smooth functioning of the colon.

For this reason, many commercial laxatives contain Cascara Sagrada as one of the main ingredients. Small doses of Cascara Sagrada can also be taken as a tonic to help the digestive process in patients suffering from digestive disorders and colon irritation.

Cascara Sagrada can inhibit blood clotting by reducing the absorption of Vitamin K; it also inhibits the absorption of glucose in the intestines.

Taken in excess, Cascara Sagrada can cause diarrhea and vomiting. Laxatives in general should not be used for long periods of time.
